Game Background…The Art of the Deal
Code. As a computer science major at Taylor University you’d think I would like to code. I didn’t. I learned enough to get by and pass my classes, but I never really liked to code and was not very good at it. So why was I a computer science major? I think it had more to do with getting a job than anything else.
Fast forward 19 years and I have not written code since leaving school. Deep down I was an artist. But growing up I didn’t see how art would lead to a well paying job. I took every art class I could at Taylor in the hopes that maybe combined with computers could possibly lead to a job in design.
My son on the other hand writes code. And he is good. Brayden is now 15 and has 4 apps in the Apple AppStore. His most recent game “The Company Game” received the coveted Apple Game of the Day feature and reached all the way up to number 1 on the paid puzzle apps chart. Did I mention he is good? I watch him write code and wonder how he knows it so well. It seems to flow out of him as easily as English. His grasp of the concepts, then the execution of solutions, in a non-native language is quite impressive to witness.
Solisquare is Brayden’s newest game. He wrote some quick code to enter in Apple’s yearly WWDC scholarship contest that was the basis for this new game. He won a scholarship. I told you he was good. So now we are working together to bring Solisquare to life. We. But I’m not writing any code.
Back to the art. One of the key “selling” points of Solisquare is going to be the decks you can unlock. These decks are being designed and created by me.The beautiful thing about the decks is that it is a way for me and my son to work together on a project. The coder and the artist, father and son doing what they love. And we hope that what we create will be loved too.
